Everyone knows that smoking is harmful and addictive. As we all know, smoking is detrimental to our health. Every year a large amount of people die from diseases caused by smoking cigarettes such as lung cancers, heart diseases and stroke. There is a mixture of nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette. Which can cause an increase in your heart rate and blood pressure. It can also cause straining in your heart and blood vessels. Even though people know all these facts they still continue to smoke.
Most teenagers are smoking and it is
because they want to look mature, to be like their friends, and to
experiment. Since teens see older people all around them smoking, especially
their parents and relatives, they smoke to act older. If their friends or peers
smoke, they may feel pressured into doing the same to be accepted. The
excitement of experimenting with something that is forbidden. Usually parents
do not allow their underage teens to smoke. Therefore, smoking becomes very
attractive. It is exciting to get cigarettes and sneak away to smoke without
being caught.
This past few months, I observe that most smokers in our school are mostly higher levels. Whenever I’m going to take a shuttle bus I always see some of the students under the trees are smoking. I don’t really know why people specially college student’s love smoking. Maybe they may have a lot of stress and pressures because of economic and personal problems. They may be homeless, or they may be dealing with alcohol or cocaine/heroin addictions. Some may be in bad marriages or relationships in which there is physical and/or verbal abuse. All these people may smoke to feel relaxed or to give them energy while going through a hard time.
Good thing, Asia Pacific College (APC) developed an anti-smoking campaign. Through this, maybe it can change smokers mind (I hope so).
Sad to know that some people know the consequences of smoking but still they keep smoking.
